About Us

Winnapaug Cottages is the luxury active adult community developed by the late James F Levy who joined with his friend, Richard Bright, to develop 55 plus housing in coastal New England. It was also to be a vehicle to return Jim and his wife Shelley to their east coast roots and allow Richard and his wife Peg Murphy-Bright to spend more time in a part of the country they loved—the Rhode Island shore. The project is owned by Newbury New England LLC, a subsidiary of Newbury Development Company of West Des Moines, Iowa. That company was started in 1987 by Jim Levy. The Newbury Companies own and manage a number of properties in Iowa among which are 2 luxury campuses for Independent and Assisted Living: 3801 Grand Assisted Living in Des Moines, Iowa and Melrose Meadows in Iowa City, Iowa.

Since Jim’s death in March of 2008 the companies are led by his son, Frank. Rochelle, Jim’s widow, is the owner of the development companies and is involved in planning and marketing for Winnapaug Cottages. Richard and Peg Murphy-Bright have been an important factor in our owners’ decisions to move here. Their joi de vivre, enthusiasm and Peg’s great parties have created wonderful camaraderie at the cottages. Peg and Richard have sold over 34 homes here and helped many buyers navigate their multiple choices. Richard Liguori, here from the start of construction planning, and his assistant project manager, Chris Robertson, have “birthed” the wonderful collection of homes you see here today as Winnapaug Cottages. Since January 2010 we have had the pleasure of working with Jean Crowley and Elizabeth Goor of Coldwell Banker Cahoone in Westerly. They and their colleagues at CBC work from our office to show our homes and service our clients with the knowledge that only a Realtor can provide. They would be happy to show you other homes in the area and to help you sell your present home by providing you a comparative market analysis or a referral to a realtor in your area.
